Fighting injustice is a big part of our Segue community. We think it’s really important that we use the knowledge and skills that we’ve learned at school to live a life that gives back and helps others.
A couple of years ago Iana Mattei visited us at the University of Manitoba and told her story. She runs an organization called ‘Reaching out Romania’, which runs a shelter for girls who were victims of human trafficking. Here, the girls receive medical attention, psychological assistance, schooling, and professional training, for the ultimate purposes of healing and reintegration.
In the 2015-2016 school year we had the opportunity to raise funds to build a greenhouse for the shelter.
Having a greenhouse will help the shelter become more sustainable by being able to provide some of their own food and potentially creating some revenue through the sale of any excess food at a market. Additionally, it would be an asset to the residents to have skills in growing food, as Romania is a very agrarian society.
Current Status: The land for the green house has been excavated and leveled and is ready to have the green house built. Currently the green house itself is sitting in the Romanian customs area and customs is demanding more money to release the green house to the shelter.
